An umbrella term for the many different forms of chlorine compound that can be found in swimming pool water as a means of disinfecting it. Chlorine is an essential element in pool water, as it kills bacteria and algae while also oxidizing the ammonia and nitrogen compounds caused when people swim.

As chlorine had just been added to the pool, it was necessary to wait before swimming in it again.
